The Good
- Natural Beauty: Praia da Bela Vista offers a serene setting with dunes, cliffs, and wild vegetation, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxation.
- Inclusivity: The beach's proximity to Praia 19, Lisbon’s renowned “gay beach,” and its appeal to a diverse crowd make it a favorite among the LGBTQIAP+ community and beyond.
- Kitesurfing Haven: With two kitesurfing schools on-site, the beach becomes a colorful spectacle on windy days, offering both a sport and a visual treat.
- Year-Round Appeal: Predominantly sunny even in winter, the beach remains a favorite throughout the year.
The Bad
- Ocean's Mood: The ocean can get rough, especially further from Costa da Caparica. Always exercise caution, especially during non-peak months when lifeguards might not be present.
- Limited Amenities: With just one restaurant on-site and no other commercial establishments, visitors should come prepared.
- Transportation: While public transportation is available, the most straightforward approach to the beach is by car or RV.

The Naked Truth

While its popularity spans across the LGBTQIAP+ community and beyond, don't expect a purely nudist crowd. Instead, anticipate a mix of sun-seekers, from solo nudists to clothed and nude families. With its dunes, cliffs, and wild backdrop, this beach truly lives up to its name: a "Beautiful View."

According to Alma Naturista (or Naturist Soul), a Portuguese naturist association, Praia da Bela Vista has held its status as an official nude beach since 1995, making it a notable destination among the nude beaches in Portugal. The designated naturist area starts 400 meters (or 1,300 feet) south of the main beach access. While these boundaries aren't strictly adhered to—with some nudists venturing closer to the parking and restaurant areas—it's evident that privacy is paramount, pushing most towards the quieter stretches. A standout feature of Praia da Bela Vista is the sheltered nooks formed by the dunes, offering protection from the wind and a secluded spot for relaxation.

Praia da Bela Vista is a haven of inclusivity. Alongside nudists, you'll find groups of teenagers playing soccer, families with children and pets, and a plethora of kite surfers, thanks to the two kitesurfing schools located there. On days favorable for kitesurfing, the sight of the ocean dotted with vibrant kites against the foamy waves is truly mesmerizing. Personally, I feel at ease visiting Praia da Bela Vista alone, especially in summer, given the constant flow of beachgoers.
Weather-wise, Praia da Bela Vista is predominantly sunny, even in winter. However, the frequent winds prompt many to seek refuge behind the dunes or set up windscreens and umbrellas. Water temperatures hover around 15ºC (59ºF) in winter and 18ºC (64.4ºF) in summer. Yet, I've experienced some unexpected fluctuations: a chilly 16ºC (60.8ºF) in August, warming to a pleasant 19ºC (66.2ºF) by September. As of this October review, the air is a warm 30ºC (86ºF) with water temperatures at a comfortable 20.1ºC (68.18ºF). But a word of caution: despite the beach being monitored during peak season and generally calm waters, always be wary of strong currents. I usually stay close to the shore, ensuring my feet are grounded.
For those seeking amenities, the beach bar and restaurant Casa da Praia is conveniently located nearby, offering the only toilet facilities on the beach, making it a crucial stop for visitors.
In conclusion, Praia da Bela Vista comes highly recommended. Its proximity to the capital is unparalleled—few European countries boast an official nude beach a mere 20 kilometers (12 miles) from their capital. It strikes a balance between solitude and sociability, allowing for peaceful communion with nature while still offering amenities like beachside dining. Set against a backdrop of golden cliffs and lush vegetation, and fronted by the majestic Atlantic, it's a destination for all—whether you're clothed or not, solo or accompanied. Whether you're jogging in winter, sunbathing in summer, or seeking a romantic getaway, Praia da Bela Vista promises a memorable experience.

Getting There
While the public transportation network effectively connects to Praia da Bela Vista, the journey by bus might not be the most comfortable. For a more convenient experience, driving by car is recommended. Additionally, shared bikes and scooters have emerged as a flexible option for beachgoers.
Car:
Begin your journey from Costa da Caparica and proceed via Avenida Dr. Aresta Branco, which runs alongside the ocean and the fossil cliff. As you distance yourself from Costa da Caparica, the urban setting gives way to a more natural landscape. Upon reaching a roundabout, opt for the first exit onto a dirt road. This route takes you past several beaches, culminating at Praia da Bela Vista. Convenient parking is available close to the beach.
Public Transport:
There's a bus service that halts at Praia do Rei. From this stop, a walk is required to reach Praia da Bela Vista. This can be undertaken either through the aforementioned dirt road or along the beach, with the ocean waves caressing your feet. For precise directions and updates, apps like Waze or Google Maps prove to be invaluable.
